Hi- I’m going to sleepaway camp this year for the first time and I’m so scared that I’m going to be homesick.
What should I do?

Hi A F,
You’re going to sleep-away camp for the first time-which is really exciting! It’s also making you anxious because you’ll miss your family. The good news is that it’s very normal to feel nervous before leaving home for such a long time. Homesickness is a very common problem, and can be easily overcome with the right preparation.
First of all, if you can, try spending a weekend away from home to practice overcoming your homesick feeling. If you know you’ve been away from home for a night or two, you’ll feel less anxious for the few weeks you’ll be in camp.
Make sure to pack things that will remind you of home. Familiar things in an unfamiliar place will make all the difference. It’ll remind you of whom and what you love.
Everyone is different; sometimes it help to be in touch with family and friends back home, but it may make you even MORE homesick. See what will make you most happy! You can also talk to your camp counselors or the camp mother. They have a lot of experience and will know how to make you feel better!
Another thing to keep in mind- don’t obsess over the fact that you’re homesick. Get involved with the fun parts of camp and the things you enjoy. Sleep-away camp is fun, but if you’re too busy feeling homesick you won’t enjoy the exciting things that are definitely going to be part of your camp experience. Don’t let your homesickness ruin your summer!
And always remember: Go out of your comfort zone to experience new things!
